Sandy North

"We should divorce." Edric proposed suddenly,

I looked back at him in surprise, biting my lips in an attempt to stop myself from parading him with questions.

I couldn't do that right now, we were at grandma Tonia's funeral.

All of Edric's relations were present, his business associate and friends were here, and even my parents, a few friends, and colleagues of mine were present, this just wasn't the right venue to demand the answers or talk about this.

So I ignored him, just like I ignored the searing pain that was piercing through my heart.

I don't know why he would suddenly ask me such a thing on an occasion like this. I was eager to find answers in his eyes but soon we were offered condolences, and we had to focus on the funeral first.

I'm very sad that grandma passed away. Since the moment I met her, she was very nice to me and defended me as always. I still couldn't believe God was so cruel to take her away.

Seeing Edric's eyes drooping, I knew he must be suffering more than I. He was raised by his grandma Tonia. Edric had a strong bond with her.

Putting aside the cruel words he said to me before, I couldn't help but want to hold his hands, but as soon as my hands touched him, he avoided me as if I was something annoying.

I froze when I caught the disgust in his eyes. My heart was torn more apart, and I felt the urge to question him, but it was my parents' turn to express their condolences.

Mom hugged me and my dad hugged Edric. I looked at Edric worrying if he was going to push my dad away, but thankfully he didn't.

Patting my back softly, mom let go and looked at us, "Edric, Sandy, I know it's hard. We all know how nice Ms.Tonia is, but I think she will bless you two as she always did. Take care."

I couldn't control my tears anymore, not knowing if it was from Edric's cruelty or grandma's death. Both together might be more accurate.

But gaffes are not allowed on this occasion. Seeing Edric frown I wiped my tears away vigorously, ready to treat the next guest.

For the next few hours, Edric didn't look at me again. I tried to pull myself together so I wouldn't fall and lose the mannerisms I was upholding.

Finally, the funeral came to a close.

After sending the guest home, I walked my parents to their car.

"My poor baby, you look so distressed and tired. Promise me, take good care." Mom still held my hands looking worried.

She was seeing the truth. I don't know why, but I've been feeling quite drowsy these few days. And I've been more stressed since Edric suddenly asked for a divorce.

"I'm fine, mother." I tried to assure her for the umpteenth time as I tried to urge her inside the car, but my father just stood them smiling lovingly at us.

"Father, please take her home, I'll see you guys later. I'm fine for real, it was just the stress from the funeral preparations but it is over now, so I'll rest soon." I lied.

I knew I was lying, and from my father's expression he knew I was lying too but he didn't say anything, just nodded and held my mother leading her inside the car.

I watched them drive off before I went to find Edric, he was just sending his family home.

Before asking him, I went to collect my thoughts to sort out possible reasons but as soon as I sat down inside his car, he mentioned the divorce again.

"I'm moving out!" He kept his eyes ahead and not on me.

He was not asking for my permission but informing me.

I clenched my fists, trying to hold my tears. I didn't even try to glance at him, being afraid to see the indifference on his face.

"Why…?" I put my fist against my teeth, trying not to look so humble, I had never felt so discombobulated as I felt at that moment.

What was the problem with Edric? Our marriage was not perfect, yet not that bad. We rarely fought and matched beautifully together sexually, so what is this?

"Edric, why do you harbor such thoughts suddenly?" I asked, "Have you met any problems? I know we have been super stressed these days, but nothing is wrong with our marriage. We didn't fight and we still made love. If you…"

Before I could finish my words, he cut me off roughly,

"It's not love, Sandy!" Edric hissed, "I can't keep lying to myself anymore. Sandy, you know well how our marriage started, "

I sighed,

"I married you only to fulfill my grandma's wish." He added,

"Yes, I've tried hard to love you and learned hard to be a good husband," He shook his head, "…But I failed."

Oh

"I don't love you, Sandy North! This so-called marriage isn't working out." He finally glances at me, almost yelling his words.

"Edric…?" I mumbled, and couldn't believe what I had just heard.

He said it wasn't love, all his tenderness toward me was fake.

Then why was he that happy to claim me during sex? Was he also forcing himself?

All our sweet memories flashed in my mind and then burst like bubbles.

I had loved Edric since our first meeting. Though it didn't add much to my family, I agreed to this marriage. I even gave up my major to be his perfect wife. I thought he would love me as he promised.

Yet now, he called it all a lie. And he wanted to end it.

Hehe!

How funny! Why is Edric so cruel to me? I can not bear this.

"Why don't you just lie to me for the rest of your life?" I sobbed, and my tears finally burst out. I stared at him, hoping for a reason but he became more furious.

"Because you are a lying bitch Sandy! Paige is back and she told me everything!"

What?!

"I once believed you would be a good wife for me. You are well well-educated and behave properly. Changing means trouble and I hate it. So I didn't think about changing our marriage before, but Paige came back and I then know the way you really are."

What?! My brows furrowed,

"Edric…" I wanted to explain more but his phone suddenly rang and I had to swallow my words. He picked it up and I didn't need a prophet to tell me who just called him, I could tell from the gentleness of his tone who he was speaking with.

It was Paige, his ex.

She was the only one who could get a fond talk from Edric, while others had to bear his harsh tones.

"Get off the car, I'm needed somewhere," He declared, I looked at him like he was crazy.

We are currently in the suburbs and it's common knowledge how extremely hard it is to get a taxi in such a place.

Did he want me to walk home?

What's worse, I felt like I was burning up suddenly, and my drowsiness returned.

"I'm still waiting for you to get off Sandy," He reminded me, keeping a poker face. How did I fall for such a man?

Clenched my bag, I opened the car door. Barely as I got out of the car, he sped off, I watched him leave until his rear light disappeared among the flood of cars that were rushing home.

Alone in the wind, I felt more helpless than ever. I couldn't help but hug myself again, tears streaming down my face indisputably.

All this life, why would I fall for such a man?

I couldn't help asking myself and piercing pain came from my lower abdomen, I rubbed my belly to soothe the pain but felt more floaty.

What happened to me?
